Conserving resources – feeding people

On 15 August 1985 the engineer Herman Berief founded the "Tofu Kostwerk GmbH" in the Westphalian town of Diestedde. This was preceded by a three-year development phase, which ended with the construction of a system for automated tofu production from whole soy beans. On this system he produced the first, purely vegetable tofu products. Hermann Berief is among the pioneers who convince with their idea. It is the firm conviction that vegetable food products are good, and that their use is easy on the Earth's resources.

Vegetarian food products

Under the brand names "Tofu" and later "Berief" Hermann Berief offers vegetarian soy products, such as tofu and sandwich spreads for conventional food retailers and bulk consumers. In 1990 at the present site in Beckum the first, large, 1200 square meter production site is erected.

Top quality and delicious variety

Ten delicious products ensure pure vegetarian variety on the plate – the young company proudly presents the tofu delicatessen assortment. The versatility of the protein-rich soy bean convinces as tofu natural and smoked, and also in spicy sandwich spreads, fine cutlets, juicy burgers and crisp frikandels.

Two generations – one goal!

Marcus Berief, son of the company founder is also enthusiastic about vegetarian food products; he joins the family company in 1998. Together, father and son drive the dynamic growth and benefit from the rethinking in the company. A healthy diet is the number one topic. For some time now, in addition to vegetarians, vegans and people with food intolerances, Berief has also reached a new, important target group: People, who as a matter principle want to eat foods that are light, sophisticated and natural – simply vegetarian.

Nutrition specialist for vegetable food products

In 2004, under the joint leadership the firm succeeds in producing fresh soy drinks its own plant, and launching them successfully on the market. Connoisseurs have the choice: Under the brand names BERIEF, "soy – so lecker" and "Soy Fit", the family company positions itself in the retail trade with a full range of vegetarian products for every meal.

Everything organic – what's the alternative?

With introduction of the organic seal in 2006, Berief definitively decides for organic quality. For the raw materials, the best organic quality is considered; cultivated and harvested in Germany and the adjacent European neighbouring countries. A challenge, particularly in light of the strict quality management, that the team masters perfectly. A decision that the consumer endorses: The new organic drinks conquer the shelves.

We want you to feel good!

The firm's 2011 organic certification underscores the increasing quality standard and confirms the Berief philosophy. As a responsible food producer, organic and vegan products should have a positive influence on the well-being of the consumers. Sustainability aspects move into focus for procurement of raw materials and in production. The company supports the regional cultivation of soy to avoid long transport distances and modernises its plants for soy processing. The newly installed technology works more efficiently and lowers consumption of raw material and water.

Invitation to a very special gourmet journey

To this point in time the company Berief has invested approximately €12 million in new construction of production and storage buildings and in the procurement of production and filling equipment. With the pioneering spirit of our company founder, Hermann Berief, our 170 person team headed by managing director Marcus Berief, consistently works on new vegetable-based product and recipe ideas. To date we work and manufacture in Beckum, in the heart of Westphalia. From this point our products travel – you find them in retail and you certainly also enjoy them in the university cafeteria, in the company canteen, or at your favourite restaurant.

In 2017 Bernd Eßer becomes a member of the management board.
